19-1 CAS USTC develops eco-friendly, edible straws

A team at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei is making paper straws from bacterial cellulose. After alginate coating, they are stable even without additional adhesives. The authors emphasize that the straws can also be eaten and thus disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.
