Sichuan patient receives first artificial heart “made-in-China”

The 42 old patient was in the end stage of dilated cardiomyopathy, and surgery was done at the Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital. The artificial heart has two parts: a 420 gram artificial blood vessel and blood pump placed in the chest, and a 3 kg external controller, which can be carried in a backpack. The inside and outside parts are connected with a wire, and the patient should pay close attention to the battery power, as each pair of batteries can supply the device for just 6 hours for outdoor activities. However, patients can  use the plugged model at home. The device costs about 1 million CN¥ (US$154,900), and operation costs are around 200,000 CN¥.
