5-2 CAS Institute of Solid State Physics proposes n-alkane-based frigerants based on their barothermic properties

A team from the institute has discovered that n-alkanes under low-pressure of ~50 MPa undergo a reversible entropy change of ~700 J kg-1 K-1, comparable to those of commercial refrigerants in vapor-based compression systems. This huge barocaloric (BC) effect associated with liquid-solid-transition (L-S-T) could open up new avenues for the development of low-cost, emission—free frigenerants.
