According to a press conference held by the National Energy Administration on July 30th, 2026, China’s coal-fired power generation reached 2.5 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in the first half of this year (January–June). Its share of total power generation fell to 49.7%, marking the first time this figure has dropped below 50% on a semi-annual basis. This achievement signals new progress in China’s energy “Green Transformation”.

Meanwhile, the share of power generated from renewable sources exceeded 40% for the first time. Renewable energy generation nationwide approached 2 trillion kWh in the first half of the year, accounting for 41.2% of total power generation—a volume sufficient to meet nearly 40% of the entire society’s electricity demand.
