Tianjin promotes brain-machine interface development (BMI) in 5 years plan

To drive technological innovation and industrialization, Tianjin recently released the “Tianjin BMI Innovative Development Promotion Action Plan (2026–2030).” The plan outlines a clear goal to attract and cultivate 50 innovative enterprises with core competitiveness by 2027, while promoting the large-scale application of related products in sectors such as wellness and elderly care, education, and advanced manufacturing. It also sets a target to establish a cluster of industry funds with a total scale exceeding 10 billion yuan by 2030 and to achieve large-scale clinical application for more than ten types of non-invasive BMI products.

A current example is the Haihe Laboratory of Brain-Machine Interaction and Human-Machine Symbiosis.

In the article, three products are described.

  • an  8-channel BMI headband. It is used to collect, encode, and decode brainwaves. By connecting the collected data to a proprietary app and processing it, the output is metrics such as the subject’s stress levels, fatigue, relaxation, and concentration.
  • another BMI headband is designed for sleep. This device can not only “record” the user’s sleep state but also facilitate high-quality sleep through active intervention.
  • another type of headgear prompts the users to control the act of clenching their right hand using only their brain-based intentions. Even if hemiplegia patients cannot move their limbs, they can complete actions using brain signals. Such rehabilitation training stimulates neuroplasticity and reconstructs neural circuits, thereby supporting the recovery of motor function. The medical devices and therapeutic solutions are already being deployed across China.
