Shanghai Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Sinopec, started operation of its 30,000-ton-per-year large-tow carbon fiber project, China’s largest production line.

In the carbon fiber industry, carbon fiber with more than 48,000 filaments (48K) per bundle is called large-tow carbon fiber. Compared to small-tow carbon fiber, its greatest advantage is its higher production volume per line under the same conditions and lower production costs, making it ideal for large-scale applications.

Shanghai Petrochemical’s Large Tou carbon fiber is a new high-strength fiber material with a carbon content of over 95%. Although its density is less than a quarter of that of steel, its strength is 7 to 9 times greater. Furthermore, it has excellent corrosion resistance and is used in a wide range of fields, including aerospace, new energy vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbine blades, and advanced equipment.
