At a press conference held on October 20, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)—in collaboration with relevant authorities—announced the launch of 136 landmark, large-scale application projects. Their objectives can be summarized by three keywords:
- The Validation.
The goal is to accelerate the maturation and practical implementation of new technologies, products, and business models. For instance, in the smart mining sector, projects will leverage resources across more than 2,800 mine sites, providing a testing ground for technologies such as cloud computing and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to facilitate a transition toward more efficient and safer mining production methods.
2. Opening up.
This involves enabling various business entities to share development opportunities. In the field of Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI), for example, projects will focus on processes such as BMI-enabled diagnosis, treatment, assistive care, and consumer applications. By establishing foundational infrastructure—including BMI data platforms, pilot production facilities, and dedicated application centers—these projects will support companies in validating their products and expanding their market reach.
3. Demonstration.
These projects will serve as models for broader, large-scale adoption. In the power and energy sector, for example, initiatives include leveraging 10-gigawatt (10,000 MW)-scale renewable energy resources in northern Hebei Province to support the “green transformation” (GX) and integrated industrial development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, as well as projects integrating advanced energy storage systems into the power grid. These projects address key requirements—such as achieving high utilization rates for new energy, developing advanced energy storage systems, and fostering the collaborative growth of green industries—by implementing a comprehensive, systematic suite of initiatives. These include grid-forming flexible high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, flexible load control, and the integration of wind power, solar power, and energy storage into a network that provides active grid support. Together, these efforts serve as a model for the green transformation (GX) of energy systems.
