China starts 50 MW demonstration project of supercritical CO2 power cycle technology

Construction began in Yantai City, Shandong Province, for the Huaneng “Rui-Tan-Hao” project—China’s first demonstration project combining molten salt thermal storage with carbon dioxide (CO2) power generation. The first phase involves constructing a 50-megawatt (MW) supercritical CO2 power generation unit paired with a 100 MW/400 megawatt-hour (MWh) molten salt thermal storage system.

Compared to conventional steam turbine power generation facilities, supercritical CO2 power cycle technology offers significant advantages. These include higher energy density and power generation efficiency, a smaller equipment footprint, and flexible output adjustment. Supercritical CO2 power generation units can stably adjust output across a load range of 0% to 100% and respond rapidly to the power grid’s peak load regulation needs.

The project is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. It aims to provide insights for the global energy sector’s transition to low-carbon operations and for enhancing the grid’s capacity to integrate renewable energy power.
