Chinese hybrid rice sets world record with seed yield of ~ 7950 kg per hectare

The Hunan Association of Agricultural Science, alongside a yield-measurement team comprising prominent experts and researchers from the China National Rice Research Institute, Wuhan University, and other institutions, conducted an on-site yield assessment for large-scale, ultra-high-yield hybrid rice seed production in Suining County, Hunan Province. The results showed a yield of 530.4 kilograms per *mu*  at the large-scale seed production demonstration field for the “Shuangliangyou 138” super rice variety in Wuyang Village—marking the first time the 500-kilogram threshold has been surpassed.

Hybrid rice has played a pivotal role in ensuring China’s food security and addressing global hunger and food shortages. In China, the annual planting area for hybrid rice remains stable at over 200 million *mu* (15 mu are equivalent to 1 ha), with a cumulative planting area exceeding 10 billion *mu* by 2025. However, hybrid rice faces challenges such as relatively high seed costs and seed production yields that have hovered around 160 kilograms per *mu* for years; these issues represent significant bottlenecks constraining the industry’s sustainable development.

In 2026, the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and partners continued research aimed at achieving ultra-high seed yields for two-line hybrid rice. The expert team randomly selected three plots in Wuyang village and measured the yield through actual mechanical harvesting. Yields were calculated following prescribed procedures—including mechanical threshing, weighing, moisture content measurement, foreign matter removal, and area measurement.
