A startup incubated by the Zhejiang University Robotics Institute has developed a “Panda” robot. It features a biomimetic design modeled after a giant panda and is equipped with the ability to maintain a body temperature close to that of a human. Powered by multimodal perception and affective computing technologies, it provides emotional support through proactive emotional interaction, fosters healthy lifestyle habits, and offers immersive, level-based English training in real-world contexts. The product underwent incubation by the Zhejiang University Robotics Institute’s research team and real-world training at the Hangzhou Robot School, successfully completing the entire process from technical development and real-world validation to commercialization.

Designed for children aged 3 to 10, “Panda” focuses primarily on emotional support and educational assistance through play. It is equipped with obstacle-avoidance capabilities, allowing it to move freely around the home, and it responds when a child picks it up.

Beyond serving as a playmate, “Panda” acts as a supporter for healthy lifestyle habits. Using visual recognition and proactive interaction technology, it identifies when it is time for bed or when hand-washing is needed, issuing gentle reminders at the appropriate moments. Parents can customize settings via smartphone; for instance, by scheduling a bedtime prompt for 8:00 PM, they can utilize the robot as a “good habit manager” to help their child develop healthy daily routines.
