USTC: Photocatalytic defluorination of “eternal chemicals” (PFAS) at low temperature

Professor Kang Yanbiao and his team from the University of Science and Technology of China have created an organic small molecule super photoreductant 10,13-diphenyl-9H-dibenzo[a,c]carbazole (KQGZthat distorts and promotes the gain and loss of electrons.

Based on this reagent, they have developed a new method for the complete defluorination of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl compounds such as Teflon at relatively low temperature (40 to 60 degrees Celsius), realizing the recovery of the difficult-to-degrade “permanent chemicals” – perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances – into inorganic fluoride salts and carbon resources.
