China’s large companies increase R&D expenditure

The “2024 China Top 500 Companies Summit Forum” was held in Tianjin, China on the 10th and 11th, and the ranking of “China’s Top 500 Companies” for 2024 was announced. The R&D expenditures of these companies in 2023 increased by 14.9% year-on-year to more than 1.8 trillion yuan (1 yuan = about 20 yen). The R&D intensity of the “China’s Top 500 Companies” reached a record high of 1.90%, with high-end equipment manufacturing and information technology services maintaining their top positions in R&D intensity. The output level of innovation results also continued to improve, with the number of valid patents held by companies increasing by 144,400 (7.7%) from the previous year to 2,029,700. Of these, the number of invention patents increased by 19.7% to 889,600, accounting for 43.8% of all patents.

Among the Top 500 companies, advanced manufacturing and next-generation information technology companies stood out in the rankings, with 31 companies in new energy equipment manufacturing, power and storage batteries, communication equipment and computer manufacturing, and semiconductor and panel manufacturing making the list, an increase of 18 over the past five years.
