The China Electricity Confederation recently released the “China Electricity Industry Annual Development Report 2024”. According to statistics, in 2023, the proportion of electricity in China’s end-user energy consumption will reach 28.1%, exceeding the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other countries. Science and Technology Daily reported.

Electricity consumption is an important measure for economic management. China’s electricity demand has maintained solid growth in recent years. In 2023, society’s total electricity consumption was 9.22 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), accounting for about 33% of global electricity consumption. Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), China’s electricity consumption has increased by an average of about 570 billion kWh per year, an increase equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of Germany.

In China, the electricity consumption structure has been continuously optimized, and among the secondary industries, electricity consumption in high-tech and equipment manufacturing increased by 11.2% year-on-year in 2023, exceeding the growth rate of the manufacturing industry as a whole by 3.8 percentage points. Of this, electricity consumption in solar power generation equipment manufacturing increased by 76.0%, electricity consumption in new energy vehicle manufacturing increased by 38.8%, and electricity consumption in charging and battery exchange services increased by 78.1%. The fact that emerging industries have maintained high electricity consumption growth indicates that China’s manufacturing production is maintaining a growth trend and that the industrial structure is being optimized and advanced toward high technology and high added value.

The proportion of electricity in China’s end-user energy consumption is expected to reach 35% by 2030.
