According to the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, the center will cooperate with a wide range of Chinese and foreign scientific research institutions, non-profit organizations, and major companies to establish a talent network in the field of synthetic biology, conduct technology cooperation and validation of concepts, and practical application of scientific and technological achievements in the field of synthetic biology.

According to Jin Qinxian, Chairman of the Center’s Strategic Development Committee, the Center has three goals: to accumulate human resources, to activate through innovation, and to expand industry. In terms of stimulating innovation, the center will build three commercialization platforms for biopharmaceuticals, high-value molecules, and commodity chemical products to commercialize technologies.

At present, Shanghai has gathered leading synthetic biology companies such as Blue Crystal Microorganisms, Cathay Biotech, and Yikelai Biotech. In the future, Shanghai will take the innovative breakthroughs of Pudong New Area as the core and the manufacturing hubs of Jinshan District and Baoshan District as two wings to create a “one core and two wings” synthetic biology spatial layout.
