According to the “2024 Global Unicorn Companies Ranking” recently released by the Hurun Research Institute, a private Chinese think tank, global unicorn companies are mainly concentrated in three areas: fintech, software services, and artificial intelligence (AI). The unicorn company with the world’s highest market capitalization was Jissek Jumping (Byte Dance), with a market capitalization of 1.56 trillion yuan (1 yuan = about 21 yen). China News Network reported.

According to the ranking, the world’s 1,453 unicorn companies are distributed in 291 cities in 53 countries, with a combined market capitalization of $4.6 trillion (about ¥155 to the dollar). By country, the U.S. had the most companies with 703, accounting for 48% of the world’s total, while China ranked second with 340 companies. By city, San Francisco topped the list with 190 companies.

The average age of the world’s unicorn companies was 10 years, and the average age of their founders was 45. Of the unicorn companies, 78% are concentrated in three areas: fintech, software services, and AI. Rupert Hoogewerff, chairman and chief research officer of the institute, said, “AI has replaced EC as one of the three major fields in this ranking. U.S. unicorn companies are mainly in the three areas of software services, fintech, and AI. China has a quarter of the world’s unicorn companies, many of which are in AI, semiconductors, and new energy,” he said.

To be among the top 10 global unicorn companies, a market capitalization of more than 235 billion yuan is required. China and the United States each had four companies in the top 10, and the others were one each from Australia and Malta. The top-ranked company was Jisetsu Jump Motion, with SpaceX in second place with 1.28 trillion yuan, and OpenAI (OpenAI) in third place with 710 billion yuan.

Guangzhou, China, currently has 24 unicorn companies, which is comparable to the number in countries such as Israel and Canada. There were also 70 unicorn companies in the Yuehua Bay Area (Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and the Greater Bay Area), which was equivalent to the number in India.
