China’s afforestation programs: about 25% contribution to global greenlands

According to official data, in 2023 the area of afforestation in China was approximately 4 million hectares, the area of grassland improvement was approximately 4.38 million hectares, and the area of improved desertified and desertified land was approximately 1.905 million hectares.

In the same year, there were 96 important ecosystem conservation and restoration projects and 25 national greening model pilot projects implemented across China. Liaoning Province, Shandong Province, Henan Province, Chongqing City, Sichuan Province, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are pilot areas of greening model provinces that promote integrated protection and restoration projects for mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes, grass, and sand. The area covered by topsoil washed away reached 63,000 square kilometers.

According to Liu Shirong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a quarter of the world’s greening in the past 20 years has come from China. This was mainly greening through tree planting and afforestation. In addition to the arid regions, greening is progressing in all regions of the country, including parts of the eastern region, and the greenery is increasing.”

This year, China has set a goal of greening approximately 6,7 million hectares of land, of which 3.6 million hectares will be afforestation area. According to the latest statistics from the National Forestry and Grass Administration, such area has already reached approximately 466,667 hectares.
