The “China Urban Low Carbon Construction Level Index 2023” from the Urban Institute of Zhejiang University evaluated urban low-carbon construction levels for 297 cities above local level. The index evaluates
- energy structure,
- economic development,
- productivity,
- urban residents,
- watershed carbon sinks,
- forest carbon sinks,
- green space carbon sinks, and
- low-carbon technologies
The team developed a digitized system and applied big data tools.
The top three cities in the 2023 edition were Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Ningbo, Nanjing, Chengdu, and Jinan in fourth through tenth place.
The top groups of low-carbon construction were all very large and extra-large cities, while the fourth group was mainly medium and small cities. This shows that there is a remarkable correlation between the level of urban low-carbon construction and the size of cities in China.
