Chinese-led team reviews “physics root”, an ethnomedicine

Extracts of “Physics root” (Veronicastrum Heist. ex Fabr. (Plantaginaceae)) are used in China and many other Asian and African countries in the treatment of ascites edema, blood stasis, pain relief, chronic nephritis, injury, fever, cough, headache, arthritis, dysentery, rheumatism, pleural effusion, liver damage, and other disorders. Gang-wan HU of the CAS Key Laboratory of Plant Germplasm Enhancement and Specialty Agriculture in Wuhan has teamed up with researchers from the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center in Wuhan and researchers to Kenya to systematically evaluate the traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology of the genus Veronicastrum, discuss its medicinal potential, modern scientific research, and the relationship between them, and put forward suggestions to promote further development and utilization of Veronicastrum.
