China’s 2021 R&D expenditures reach 2.44 % of GDP

According to the National Bureau of Statistics,  national research and development (R&D) expenditures in 2021 were 2.795,630 trillion yuan, up 356.32 billion yuan from the previous year, with a growth rate of 14.6%. The R&D cost intensity (the ratio of R&D to GDP) was 2.44%, up 0.03 percentage points from the previous year. (1) R&D expenditures maintained a high growth rate. (2) The share of basic research expenditures in R&D expenditures rose significantly. (3) The proactive status of R&D investment by enterprises has continuously increased. (4) The leading role of the eastern region in R&D investment was remarkable. (5) Fiscal science and technology expenditure returned to positive growth.
