China’s R&D expenditure is now close to 60 % of the US R&D budget

According to China’s National Office of Statistics, China’s R&D budget has increased by annually 11 % since 2011 and is now at 2.13 % of GDP, number 13 of OECD’s 35 member countries. China ‘s R & D expenditure became the second largest in the world in 2013, accounting for about 40% of the US R&D budget. In 2017, this ratio reached nearly 60%. Between 2013 and 2016, the average annual growth of China’s R&D budget was 11.1%, of the USA 2.7%, of EU26 2.3%, and of Japan only 0.6%.
