Under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Energy Cooperation, the plant was built by China’s Three Gorges Group, together with schools, hospitals, roads and other public welfare projects for the local communities. It provides some 4,500 jobs for the local community every year. The Karot Hydropower Plant is located on the Jhelum River in Pakistan’s Punjab Province, has a total installed capacity of 720 MW and was built for total investment of $1.74 billion. Once all the power generators are fully operational, the project is expected to reduce the use of standard coal by about 1.4 million tons every year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 3.5 million tons. „The project will promote Pakistan’s energy construction and economic and social development, and at the same time help the world achieve its goal of carbon neutrality“.
