16-8 China’s TanSat satellite acquires first global carbon flux data set

As the third nation after the USA and Japan, China is now monitoring global carbon dioxide emissions with the TanSat satellite. A high-resolution grating spectrometer measures CO2 and O2 absorption at three wavelengths in reflected sunlight. A large-field spectrometer is used to produce high-resolution images in five spectral regions, compensating for measurement errors due to clouds and aerosols, and measuring chlorophyll fluorescence to estimate global photosynthetic productivity. China aims to peak its carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and become carbon neutral before 2060.
