The relatively mature technology will use straw, agricultural and forestry residues to replace about 400 million t of coal annually. SO2 concentrations are lower compared to coal or natural gas. At gas prices of > 3,5 yuan/m3, biomass briquettes are economically viable. Guangdong and Jiangsu Province are pioneering, but heavely polluted plances such as Beijing and Tianjin are following suit.
