Using Chlorella zofingiensis, the group of Junchao HUANG has found at the institute that this organism has all genes for required for the production of astaxanthin through the MEP pathway and that, under stress conditions, these genes are upregulated, leading to the synthesis of considerable quantities of astaxanthin in this organism.
