At the opening ceremony of the 2024 China Space Day main venue event held on April 24, China’s National Aeronautics Administration announced that the International Lunar Science Research Station (ILRS), proposed by China and jointly constructed with other countries, will have a new member and that the Chang’e-7 lunar probe will carry six international payloads.

The newest members of the International Lunar Science Station are one country and two organizations: Nicaragua, the Asia-Pacific Organization for Space Cooperation, and the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences. China will cooperate with its partners on many aspects of the station, including argumentation, project implementation, operation, and application.

The international payload project for the Chang’e-7 mission will ultimately select six payloads by Egypt, Bahrain, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Thailand, and the International Association of Lunar Observatories based on the scientific objectives and engineering feasibility of the payloads. The Chang’e-7 mission is scheduled for launch around 26 years, and will investigate the lunar environment of the lunar South Pole, lunar soil, ice, and volatile materials, and conduct high-precision observation and research on lunar topography, composition, and structure.
