Researchers at CAS Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Processes have developed a new method in laboratory scale to produce lactic acid from agricultural waste biomass by high-temperature mixed whole-cell catalysis.

Using Clostridium perfringens, corn straw, wheat straw or xylose residue were used as a substrate for inoculation with thermophilic Geobacillus stearothermophilus 2H-3 cells to achieve lactic acid production without intermediate sterilization, nutrient supplementation or adjustment of fermentation conditions. The lignocellulose-based lactic acid had a high optical purity (99.5%) and was obtained in high yield (51.36 g/L and 0.74 g/g biomass).
