A study led by Dr. Yen-Ping Hsueh’s group at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica, has uncovered that the oyster mushroom develops a lollipop-like structure (toxocyst) on the mycelium that stores a volatile compound, 3-octanone, to kill nematodes. This study “A carnivorous mushroom paralyzes and kills nematodes via a volatile ketone” has been published in Science Advance.

The two leading authors, Dr. Ching-Han Lee and Yi-Yun Lee are former and current TIGP-MCB students at Academia Sinica who carried out the research with supports from Dr. Takehito Nakazawa and Dr. Yoichi Honda from the Kyoto University, Dr. Jiun-Jie Shie and Niaz Wali from Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica, Dr. Yu-Chu Chang from Taipei Medical University, and Sue-Ping Lee and Wen-Li Pon from Imaging Core of Institute of Molecular biology, Academia Sinica. Funding was provided by Academia Sinica and the National Science and Technology.
