China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO Group), a state-owned defense company, has showcased its Fuxi special-purpose humanoid robot, which can conduct all-weather reconnaissance, intelligent patrols and operations in hazardous areas, while allowing human operators to remotely control the robot’s movements in real time.
Together with a specially developed teleoperation solution, the robot is designed to establish a new model of human-machine coordination featuring “remote human control and on-site robotic operations”.
The Fuxi is a full-size humanoid robot. Its development focuses on key technologies including human-motion sensing, motion transfer across different robotic platforms and coordinated whole-body control. The robot is capable of personnel identification and issuing alerts in abnormal situations as part of sentry duties. It is also designed for tasks including all-weather reconnaissance, intelligent patrols and substitute operations in hazardous areas. Multiple Fuxi robots can work together in formation, while each robot can accurately reproduce a human operator’s movements in real time during remote operations, according to the company.
This remote-operation capability is supported by a special teleoperation system dubbed “external avatar,” which the release described as China’s first independently controllable teleoperation solution for full-size humanoid robots weighing around 90 kilograms.
The system has achieved breakthroughs in real-time human-motion remapping and teleoperation technologies. Designed particularly for high-risk and complex environments, it can support remote reconnaissance, unmanned operations and specialized response operations. By combining remote human operation with robots performing tasks on site, the system provides a new solution for unmanned applications in special-purpose scenarios, according to the NORINCO Group.
A formation of Fuxi robots will also demonstrate nighttime urban inspection tasks, showcasing multi-robot coordination. According to the release, the demonstration features “multi-robot coordinated management, intelligent assessment and closed-loop response,” with the aim of accelerating the application of frontier technologies in real-world operations. Beyond the Fuxi humanoid robot, the Hangzhou Zhiyuan Research Institute has developed an intelligent military equipment system covering individual protection, intelligent computing and situational awareness, further expanding the military-oriented part of NORINCO’s display.
