China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy) revealed that it had achieved a significant milestone in its independently developed hydrogen-coal co-firing technology: successfully demonstrating co-firing with a high ratio of 50% green hydrogen and, separately, 100% pure hydrogen combustion. This marks a major breakthrough for China’s clean, low-carbon hydrogen-coal co-firing technology.
The technology utilizes a fully self-developed low-nitrogen burner designed for hydrogen-coal co-firing and incorporates a comprehensive safety protection system covering the entire process—from hydrogen supply to combustion within the furnace. This setup ensures thorough mixing and combustion of hydrogen and pulverized coal inside the boiler; testing equipment successfully demonstrated co-firing with a 50% hydrogen-to-coal heat input ratio. This means that using green hydrogen can reduce both coal consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 50%, while also effectively suppressing the generation of nitrogen oxides.
China possesses the world’s largest installed capacity for coal-fired power generation; consequently, the “Green Transformation” (GX) of the coal power industry holds vital practical significance for achieving the nation’s “Dual Carbon” goals (peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality). This achievement demonstrates a promising technological pathway for significantly reducing carbon emissions from coal-fired power units in the future, marking a crucial step forward for the green transformation of China’s coal power sector and the integrated development of coal power with new energy sources.
