The S2000, developed by Chinese technology company Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology Co., Ltd. , is the world’s first megawatt-class airborne wind power system adapted to urban environments. A ‘mobile battery’ floating in the sky, the system consists of a lightweight floating capsule, an efficient ducted fan, a smart mooring cable, and a ground control station. The capsule is filled with 14,000 cubic meters of helium creating approximately 14 tons of buoyancy. The entire system weighs approximately 11 tons, making it possible for it to ‘fly’ on buoyancy alone. The main capsule is equipped with two automatically adjusting airbags to maintain internal pressure balance in response to temperature changes.
The S2000 generates electricity by rotating blades using wind power, similar to conventional wind turbines, but differs in that the power generation equipment is located in the air rather than on the ground. The higher the altitude, the more abundant the wind resources, the faster the wind speeds, and the greater the stability, resulting in correspondingly higher power generation efficiency. The wind accelerates as it passes through the system’s duct structure, rotating the generator. The generated electricity is transmitted to the ground via cables and connected to the power grid via a converter. At full capacity, it can generate 1,000 kWh.
In addition to power generation, it can also be equipped with communication base stations and environmental monitoring equipment, making it a multi-functional platform for low-altitude economics. Because the power generation unit is airborne, it has minimal impact on the ground and can be placed near urban areas with high power demand, reducing transmission losses. It can also be rapidly deployed to provide power support in disaster relief and other situations.
This system is commercially available, with costs approaching those of conventional wind power generation.
