According to the National Energy Administration of China, as of the end of 2025, the number of electric vehicle charging stations in China had surpassed 20,092,000. Of these, 4,717,000 were public charging stations and 15,375,000 were private charging stations.
In 2025, upgrading showed three key characteristics.
- First, scale expanded quickly. China installed its first charging station in 2006, and 13 years later, in June 2019, the number of charging facilities reached 1 million. Five years later, in June 2024, the number reached 10 million, and just 18 months after that, it reached 20 million.
- Second, charging efficiency is becoming even more efficient. The average charging output per charging gun at public charging facilities across China is 46.5 kilowatts, a 33% increase compared to the previous year,
- hird, facilities are now covering wider areas. There are a total of 71,500 charging poles at highway service areas across China, covering more than 98% of service areas across the country, and charging facilities have been extended to all townships in 19 provinces.
By the end of 2027, the number of charging facilities across China will increase to 28 million, with a combined output of more than 300 million kilowatts, sufficient to meet the charging needs of more than 80 million electric vehicles and double the charging service capacity.
