The team of Tian Zhijian and Wang Congxin at CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics has developed a high-performance dedicated catalyst and complete set of technologies for the hydroisomerization of non-edible oils. This technology allows for flexible adjustment of process parameters according to user needs, meeting three product schemes:
- full production of ultra-low pour point biodiesel,
- co-production of ultra-low pour point biodiesel with sustainable aviation fuel, and
- full production of sustainable aviation fuel.
In 2024, the technology completed a 100-ton-level pilot-scale amplification test, and all product indicators met relevant domestic and international quality standards.
Using this technology, Blue Whale Bioenergy (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. has invested in a new 500,000-ton/year industrial-grade oil-to-biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel project. This project can process 500,000 tons of waste oil annually, producing over 420,000 tons of biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel. The project has a total investment of 2.2 billion yuan and was selected as a National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Green and Low-Carbon Advanced Technology Demonstration Project in May 2025.
