A research team led by Professor He Jianxing of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University transplanted the left lung of a gene-edited Bama Xiang pig (a pig native to Guangxi) into a brain-dead patient, simulating a common clinical single lung transplant procedure. The donor pig had six genes edited to reduce immune risks after human transplantation. Postoperative respiratory, blood, and imaging monitoring showed that the transplanted lung maintained ventilation and gas exchange functions for nine days, during which time no hyperacute rejection reactions occurred, and pathogenetic surveillance revealed no active infection.
