According to the “Nature Index Research Leaders Ranking 2025” (based on 2024 full-year data), China ranked first overall for the second consecutive year.

The countries following China in the ranking are the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and France, respectively. South Korea rose to seventh place overall, Canada was in eighth place, and India and Switzerland maintained their ninth and tenth places.

The Nature Index evaluates the extent to which researchers in each country have contributed to high-quality scientific papers using an indicator called “share.” China’s share in 2024 will reach 32,122, up 17% from the previous year. China’s number of institutions ranked in the world’s top 10 has increased from seven in 2023 to eight. The Nature Index data shows that Asian countries are increasing their presence as a whole.

In terms of the ranking by institution, all eight of the top 10 institutions in the world are Chinese institutions, except for Harvard University (2nd place) and Germany’s Max Planck Society (9th place). The Chinese Academy of Sciences maintained its first place, the University of Science and Technology of China (3rd place), and Zhejiang University (4th place) rose from 10th place to 4th place. The fifth to eighth places are Peking University, University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, and Nanjing University, and the tenth place is Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
