According to an interview with the National Energy Administration, China’s renewable energy power generation capacity reached 2.017 billion kilowatts (kW) as of the end of April 2025. This is equivalent to the total power generation capacity of about 90 Three Gorges Dams, and is a 58% increase from the previous year.
Wind and solar power generation capacity totaled 1.53 billion kW, exceeding thermal power generation. New renewable energy generation capacity in 2024 is expected to be 373 million kW, exceeding 300 million kW for the second consecutive year, accounting for more than 50% of the new increase in the world.
According to the “Special Action Implementation Plan for Optimizing Power System Adjustment Capacity (2025-27),” the construction and optimization of adjustment capacity will support the rational use of new energy additions of more than 200 million kW per year between 2025 and 2027, and maintain the utilization rate of new energy across China at above 90 percent.
