According to an official survey, as of 2024, 15.37% of Chinese people had scientific literacy, and 44.07% had basic scientific literacy, adding up to 440 million people.

Being scientifically literate means respecting the scientific spirit, having a scientific way of thinking, mastering basic scientific methods, understanding the necessary scientific and technological knowledge, and using it to analyze and judge things and solve real problems.

In previous surveys, only a judgment and analysis was conducted on whether or not people had scientific literacy, but this time, a step-by-step survey was conducted, and the hierarchical structure of the public’s scientific literacy was subdivided into four categories based on the scores of the scientific literacy survey questionnaire: “high scientific literacy” (85 points or more), “scientific literacy” (70 points or more), “basic scientific literacy” (55 points or more), and “low scientific literacy.”

The results of this survey showed a pyramid-shaped distribution of the ratios of people who fell into the top three categories, with 1:7:19. Among them, there were many people with “basic scientific literacy,” reaching 440 million people in the population aged 18 to 69. The average score for scientific literacy was 68 points, indicating a medium level of understanding and knowledge of science.
