According to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOCCO), China’s first offshore carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project made a new breakthrough at the Enping 15-1 platform in the Pearl River Mouth Basin.

The Enping 15-1 oilfield CCUS project is located about 200 km southwest of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, and the working water depth is about 90 meters. Through a series of technological processes including “recovery, refining, compression and injection”, the project will convert CO2 generated during oil field development into a supercritical state and inject it into an oil layer 1,200 to 1,600 meters underground at a rate of 8 tons per hour. This will increase the rate of crude oil recovery and also realize permanent storage of CO2. It is expected that a total of more than 1 million tons of CO2 will be injected on a large scale over the next 10 years, and crude oil production will increase by 200,000 tons.

The Enping 15-1 platform is Asia’s largest offshore crude oil drilling platform, and is equipped with functions such as oil well drilling, automatic remote operation, self-power generation and power grid construction, and integrated oil, gas and water treatment. To achieve the goal of CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery, the platform has newly installed key equipment such as CO2 compressors, gas processing and cooling systems. China’s first offshore CCUS facility system has been built, with the domestic production rate of the equipment reaching 100%.
