In Jintang County, Gansu Province, villagers are working to install sand-control walls to combat desertification. The traditional “grass grid” (dried straw arranged in a checkerboard pattern, one meter square, and buried in the sand) is combined with sand-control walls to effectively slow down the wind speed and help vegetation recover, and more than 400,000 meters of sand-control walls have been completed so far.

Since it is impossible to transport goods by car in the depths of the desert, people have previously carried sand on their backs, but recently drones are being used for transportation.
