According to data from the National Energy Administration of China, as of the end of July this year, China’s domestic wind and solar power generation capacity reached 1.206 billion kilowatts (kW), achieving the target that China pledged at the Climate Ambition Summit more than six years ahead of schedule. As of the end of September, new wind and solar power generation capacity accounted for more than 80% of the total new power generation capacity.

According to a spokesperson for the bureau, in the first three quarters of 2024, China’s domestic renewable energy generation reached 2.51 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), up 20.9% from the same period last year, accounting for about 35.5% of total generation. Of this, wind and solar power generation totalled 1.349 trillion kWh, roughly the same level as the electricity consumption of the tertiary industry and exceeding the daily electricity consumption in urban and rural areas.
