Professor Jiao Kui’s team from Tianjin University has come up with a new fuel cell digital design method through high-precision mathematical modeling. It can quickly create and optimize fuel cell design proposals, improve battery performance, shorten research and development time, and reduce costs.
The research team built a high-precision simulation model in the field of fuel cell design theory and method, and optimized the battery structure. They then came up with a design method suitable for commercial fuel cells and built a large-scale fuel cell 3D + 1D simulation model. Its calculation efficiency is 10 to 20 times higher than conventional 3D models, allowing multiple types of battery design proposals to be created quickly and shortening research and development time.
According to Dr. Li Feiqiang, co-corresponding author of the paper and vice general manager of Beijing Yihuatong Science and Technology Co., Ltd., the hydrogen fuel cells designed with this new method have indicators such as electrochemical reaction and consistency of flow resistance distribution that are more than 20% higher than the mainstream products on the market today. In addition, manufacturers’ design and manufacturing costs can be reduced to 60% of the current level, and research and development time can be shortened to one-third of the previous level.
The digital-aided design method put forward by the team is versatile and can be used for many commercial fuel cells, effectively shortening the research and development period of batteries, reducing costs, and promoting the commercialization process. The method can also be extended to other electrochemical devices such as lithium batteries and electrolyzers.
