On November 7, 2024, he Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina issued the “Berlin Declaration: The Road to Carbon Neutrality” in Berlin, Germany. They proposed to strengthen basic research and international cooperation and jointly explore ways to achieve carbon neutrality, and called on young scientists to play a greater role in achieving the carbon neutrality goal.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina co-hosted the second bilateral symposium “Science and the Future” in Berlin on October 29 and 30. Based on the latest research results in the field of carbon neutrality, the symposium brought together about 100 top and young scientists from both countries to discuss the challenges and solutions they face in achieving the carbon neutral goal. Former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Bai Chunli, and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Professor Benjamin List, delivered keynote speeches.
To comply with the Paris Agreement, China and Germany have set a goal of significantly reducing carbon emissions. Scientists have defined effective measures to achieve this goal and called for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. During the symposium, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hou Jianguo and President of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina Gerald Haug jointly signed and released the “Berlin Declaration: The Road to Carbon Neutrality.” The declaration explored the positive impact of science on society, addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality from a scientific perspective. They called for coordinated efforts in areas including policy, economics and international cooperation, and stressed the important role of scientific and technological innovation in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.
In 2019, the Chinese and German academies of science jointly issued the Beijing Declaration at the first bilateral symposium on Science and the Future, in which they jointly proposed strengthening basic research. In the Berlin Declaration released this time, the two sides reiterated their commitment to continue cooperation in a spirit of mutual trust, work together to build a bridge between science and society, jointly cultivate young scientists, and achieve great results in Sino-German international scientific cooperation.
