China has established a certificate system that serves as the only evidence that energy users have consumed green power and the only basis for proving its environmental attributes. One green certificate corresponds to 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy power.

According to the National Energy Administration of China, 889 million green certificates were issued in China by the end of July this year. The breakdown is as follows:

  • wind power generation accounted for 356 million, or 40% of the total,
  • solar power generation accounted for 261 million, or 29.31%,
  • general hydroelectric power generation accounted for 204 million, or 22.94%,
  • biomass power generation accounted for 68.69 million, or 7.73%, and
  • other renewable energy power generation accounted for 310,000, or 0.03%.

The number of green certificate transactions in China in July was 24.47 million. As of the end of July, a total of 291 million green certificate transactions had been made.
