Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have proposed a new paradigm for quantitative synthetic biology which emphasizes the establishment of mathematical models or AI models that can quantitatively predict biological systems to promote synthetic biology from trial and error to accurate prediction, improve the rational design ability of biological systems, and accelerate the development of biomanufacturing and bioeconomy.

They have summarized three rational design paradigms for quantitative synthetic biology: principle-based design, “bottom-up” design, and artificial intelligence-assisted design. All three design paradigms emphasize close integration with quantitative analysis methods, using mathematical logic and quantitative relationships to make quantitative predictions of biological systems, and provide a basis for the rational design of synthetic biological systems.
