The Nature Index data released online on June 6 showed that China still topped the database after the Nature Index included more medical journals last year. The data also showed that China’s scientific research cooperation with the “Belt and Road” countries is increasing rapidly.

According to the Nature Index, chemistry and physics are areas where China has a clear advantage, accounting for 85% of China’s total share of the Nature Index. At the same time, the output of other disciplines is also increasing rapidly. For example, China’s share in the field of biological sciences increased by 15.8% from 2022 to 2023.

The data also showed that China’s scientific research cooperation with the “Belt and Road” countries is increasing rapidly. Between 2015 and 2023, the number of natural science research papers involving China and at least one “Belt and Road” country increased by 132%.

Along with the latest Nature Index, there is also a list of the top 100 Chinese institutions in terms of paper share. The top ten are the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Science and Technology of China, the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Since China surpassed the United States in the contribution of high-quality natural science research output tracked by the database in 2022, the gap between the two countries in the field of natural sciences has continued to widen, with China leading by nearly 5,000 in terms of share. This allows China to maintain its overall leading position in the Nature Index, although the United States still leads significantly in the field of health sciences tracked by the index.

The Nature Index is compiled and published regularly by an agency under the internationally renowned science and technology publishing organization “Springer Nature Group”. It tracks scientific research papers published in high-quality journals and reflects the global high-quality scientific research output and cooperation based on the number and proportion of papers published by relevant institutions, countries or regions.
