In 2023, students of Shenzhen University visited the Guizhou Red Water Oolong Chicken Farm and spent more than eight months developing a smart farming system for Oolong chickens,  under the guidance of faculty members and Tencent’s engineers. Through continuous upgrades, the students identified and tracked 250,000 oolong chickens. Six months after the system went live, the farm’s production of oolong chickens has increased by more than 60,000 birds and the shipping rate has improved by 30%.

The project team used deep learning computer vision technology, including target detection, tracking, and behavior identification, to quickly detect chickens in poor health and reduce the risk of spreading infection. The team also built a foreign object alarm function to prevent ‘chicken thievery’ by intruders such as stray dogs and weasels, and utilized IoT devices such as temperature and rainfall sensors to monitor the poultry house environment.

In return, the breeding farm sent hundreds of crowned chickens and hundreds of chicken eggs to the class as a token of appreciation before the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, February 10, 2024). The students decided to cook the oolong chicken in the cafeteria to make “AI Chicken Soup” before the Chinese New Year break and offer free tasting to the faculty and students of the university.
