According to China’s State Forestry and Grassland Administration, in the second half of 2023 more than 667,000 ha land in Northwest, Northeast and North China were subject to afforestation and grass planting. Three key activities, namely, the ecological measures in the Hengtung area of the Yellow River (the area where the Yellow River bends in a “几” shape), measures against the two major desertification areas of Horqin and Hunsandak, and measures against the expansion of the Hexi Corridor-Taklamakan desert, are considered the most important issues in this “Three North” project . In accordance with the requirements of the overall plan of the project, China aims to achieve the target of 40 million ha by 2030, of which 13.33 million ha is land area for combating desertification and 26.67 million hectares is area for strengthening ecological protection and restoration results.
