According to China Petrochemical Corporation, China’s first million-ton class CCUS (Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage) project at the Qilu Petrochemical – Shengli Oil Field started operation on August 29. CCUS is an emerging technology for low-carbon and high-efficiency development of fossil energy, which captures and purifies CO2 emitted during production, and then reuses and stores it in a new production process. The project will be undertaken by Qilu Petrochemical to capture and provide CO2 and transport it to the Victory oil field for displacement and storage. The annual reduction of CO2 emission will amount to 1 million tons. According to China Petrochemical officials, the project will cover more than 25 million tons of ultra-low permeability crude oil reserves and deploy a total of 73 injection wells, injecting a cumulative total of more than 10 million tons in 15 years, increasing crude oil production by nearly 3 million tons and increasing extraction rates by more than 12 percent. At the same time, the project will reduce CO2 emissions by 1 million tons annually. This is equivalent to planting nearly 9 million trees. The project will provide practical experience and technical data for China to deploy CCUS project construction on a large scale, helping China achieve its CO2 emissions peak-out and carbon neutrality goals.
