As reported at the opening ceremony of the 29th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE) in Beijing, as of June 2022 China had 54 nuclear reactors in operation and 23 under construction, ranking second in the world. China now has the third generation nuclear power plant technologies “Hualong No. 1” and “Guohe No. 1,” is continuously promoting research and development of large advanced pressurized water reactors and high-temperature gas reactors, and has begun construction of onshore commercial modularized small reactors. New breakthroughs have been achieved in the research and development of key technologies for advanced nuclear energy systems, including sodium-cooled fast reactors, molten salt reactors, and fusion reactors.
