China Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.  recently released a report on “China Nuclear Power Biodiversity Protection Practice 2022”. According to the report,  China Nuclear Power has integrated the concept of biodiversity protection into its entire processes and regularly carries out marine ecological survey activities in the coastal waters and the genetic diversity of marine organisms. Corals are distributed around the Hainan Nuclear Power Plant Phase 2 Units 3 and 4 and the surrounding waters. To reduce the impact of construction on corals, the builders used anti-fouling curtains during project construction to reduce the spread of suspended sediments and keep the water clean.  In order to increase the breeding number of white mussels, China Nuclear Power used residual heat from wastewater to farm white mussels in Hainan province. The Fuqing nuclear power plant area is adjacent to the Fujian Xinghuawan Waterfowl Provincial Nature Reserve.  In conjunction with the characteristics of the site and the surrounding bio-environment, directional plants are used to protect the slopes and to restore the landscape.
China’s nuclear power generation will exceed 1.35 trillion kWh by June 2022. This is equivalent to a reduction of 408 million tons of standard coal and 1.07 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and the ecological effect is equivalent to planting an area of 3,688,500 hectares.
