2021/12 China launches „Earth satellite“ to support sustainable development of developing countries

The SDGSAT-1 satellite is equipped with three payloads: 

. a thermal infrared imager, 

. a micro-optical imager, and 

. a multispectral imager

They are designed to achieve a fine picture of human activity traces around the clock, and will provide data support for the study of indicators characterizing the interaction between humans and nature and the monitoring, evaluation and scientific research on the realization of global SDGs. 

Project leader is Guo Huadong, an academician of the CAS who also leads the “Earth Big Data Science Project“.

Data will be shared globally to provide the international community, especially developing countries, with data needed to carry out research on sustainable development goals. According to CAS, the satellite is an important manifestation of China’s substantial contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and a concrete action to show the international community China’s role as a great power.
